Aperture

–        Big hole lets in most light

–        Small hole lets in least light

Longer the shutter speed the more light that gets let in – Long exposure

Shorter the Shutter speed the less light that gets let in – Short exposure

Smaller the aperture the more that is in focus

Small hole = more in focus

Ansel Adams divided world into ten zones

Zone 1 – 2 – 3 – 4 – 5 – 6 – 7 – 8 – 9 – Zone 10

Zone 1 = Completely Black, no detail

Zone 10 = Completely White, no detail

Zone 5 = Mid-grey

 

Light meter

Measures the amount of light -> depends on ASA/ ISO

Gives you combination of Aperture and Shutter Speed

Gives you zone 5 each time

 

Testing -> put someone up by the light/ ‘window’ and used the light meter to read different points to get different affects

1)     Side on by Window – Take reading from middle – In between highlight and shadow – Reading 5 down middle of the face

2)     Took reading from light – zone 5 by the light -> got underexposed shadow = dark face

3)     Took reading from shadow – zone 5 in shadow -> overexposed light = exploding light
